Safari Delights

Today, we set off to our first day of Safari with our guide Idi to Tarangire National Park in our Safari jeep. It was about a two hour ride from our accommodation in Arusha, but unlike yesterday, the road was smooth and without much traffic. The scenery included cows and goats being herded by villagers, open space with scattered trees, and a dry landscape that was mesmerizing.

This gem is a tank and Idi is an exceptional driver.

Arriving at Tarangire, Idi had to check us in and while we waited, I got a chance to speak with some boys who were about middle school age. It was their first time visiting the park, and their excitement was palpable. They were also excited to practice their English. Besides the boys, there were also bus loads of pre-k and primary age students who were on a field trip. I loved watching them be playful and silly with each other. It was my first blessing of the morning.

After we got checked in, we entered the park in our safari vehicle. Within minutes, Idi spotted a pumba (warthog). We were as giddy as two kids in a candy store! For the next two hours, we saw various animals including impalas, elephants, elans, zebras, giraffes, African buffalos, and a several others. It is an experience like no other to see these beautiful creatures in their own habitat. Seeing them was my second blessing. Tomorrow, we’re off to Serengeti National Park. Until then, here are some pictures from our sightings today.

Pumba
We saw many zebras in the park. It seemed like every turn we took, they were there. We learned that their stripes are like our fingerprints. No two are identical.
There were many elephants as well. These two walked right in front of our vehicle. What a rush!
There were a few giraffes which we got lucky enough to see.
On our way out of the park, Idi spotted an ostrich.

Were those the rare black giraffes? They look a little darker than the regular brown/light brown griaffes.

    1. I don’t believe we saw any of the black giraffes although when they’re far away, it’s hard to tell. They are beautiful, graceful animals.
