Spiritual Encounter

There are times in life when you experience something that reaffirms a belief. Today, I had a moment just like that, one that connected me to my faith. It was an unexpected moment but very much needed on this long walking day.

We were just outside of São João da Madeira. We had stopped for a coffee and pastry plus get a short rest. As we’re walking down this path, I could see this beautiful church at the other end. My attention was completely fixated on the church, when all of a sudden I hear, “Bom día! Boas viagens!” (good day and good travels). I immediately turned around and there was this sweet woman, with a lovely smile and sparkling eyes looking at us outside her window. I immediately responded, “Obrigada” (thank you) and continued walking. For some reason, I decided to look back after taking a few steps, and she was still watching us and smiling. At that moment, I decided to go back to her.

I asked her if I could take a picture with her, and she just shrugged her shoulders as if to say, “Sure!” I took a few selfie pictures with her. She asked me where I was from, and I told her I was from the U.S. She then proceeded to tell me something which I could not comprehend but knew that whatever it was it brought her much joy. When she finished her story, she looked me in the eye, placed her hands on my face and pulled me toward her to place a gentle kiss on my cheek. At that very moment, I felt I was back with my grandmother. This feeling of being home poured over me.

I knew I needed to go, we were only at mile 6 out of an 18 mile day. All I really wanted to do was stay in her presence and inhale every ounce of joy she was sharing with me. Alas, I said goodbye, gave her a kiss on her cheek and a hug. As I turned to go, I started to cry. I knew in my heart my grandmother had come to visit me through this beautiful angel. My heart was full. Te amo Mami!❤️

  1. Life. Isn’t it amazing – the gifts we receive just when we need them most. But only if you are open and willing to receive them. Lucky you. Lucky sweet “abuelita”. Now you have me crying. How sweet.

  3. And so there are tears running down my cheeks! Isn’t it odd, but so wonderful, when someone reminds us so deeply of someone we’ve lost?! You are blessed! 😘😘🪄

  7. I got very emotional reading this post. As much as the Camino brings to you the beauty and physical challenges it is the people that bring us a humanity. I can’t say how many times I found myself wanted to engage, particularly with the seniors of our world. They provided a time capsule that you just can’t find in our fast forward device driven world. How wonderful that in a way you both touched each other in that moment and you gave her of yourself. You are both richer for the experience.

But that’s just how you role Kathy and why we love you!
