Goodbye Lisbon

For the past few days, we have been exploring Lisbon, Portugal as it is the beginning of our Camino tomorrow. It is a hilly, coastal city that has much to offer on history, art and food. The language is similar to Spanish but definitely different enough to make it a challenge for me to understand all the time. However, this does not get in the way of being able to communicate with the people as their kindness overrides any lack of comprehension.

For me, Lisbon is a soulful city. Its history is everywhere even on the sidewalks and streets. They are adorned with shiny rock mosaics as opposed to concrete and asphalt. The plazas have these beautiful, intricate designs as well and give the city a fairytale feel. The architecture is indicative of the various groups that invaded this land as well as the transition to a more modern style, just like the people that call Portugal their home. It’s fascinating to see the contrast.

Art is also very prevalent in Lisbon not just in the numerous museums but also in the architecture, murals and open air art sculptures. Walking is the best way to discover the various forms of art throughout the city. Art says a lot about the soul of a city/country. Lisbon’s soul is pure and steeped in tradition.

In addition to history and art, the variety of food is plentiful. Typical Portuguese food includes cod fish (bacalhau), seafood rice, pork and of course pastel de nata, a delicate round pastry filled with custard. Unfortunately, my hunger overtook the need for pictures. However, here’s one I took from tonight’s dinner – yummy pumpkin soup.

Lisbon has been a joy to explore and it’s time for us to move forward. Tomorrow, we begin this next Camino. I have no idea what to expect because I never found a book that could give me insight into this path. Therefore, it is a mystery to me. What I do know is that I am dedicating my walk to a dear friend’s son who passed away this week. I want to honor his memory and his family’s love for him by walking The Way with an open heart and much faith.

Thank you all for wishing us many blessings on our journey.

    Dear Amiga,

How appropriate that I open Facebook for the first time in a long while and read your posting. Lisbon sounds wonderful, but dedicating your walk is so significant and heartfelt. It will make the journey even more purposeful and spiritual.
    Vaya con Dios!

  3. I’ve been waiting for the perfect moment when I would be able to catch my vicarious ride along with you on your second Camino adventure! And today it is! It’s funny, as I so wanted to not so much to binge, but rather totally immerse myself into your experience. So I’ve been saving up! It’s like a long ago E ticket for the best rides at Disneyland back in the day. I’m strapped in with the bar tight on my legs and my hands in the air. Here we go Camino! Oh, and the Sintra Castle looks so beautiful. Never seen anything like it. Did you take a tour?
